Kips Bay Decorator Show House 2015 - Charles Pavarini Midnight Manhattan Lounge

Exclusive Tips from Thom Filicia & More Designers from the 2015 Kips Bay Decorator Show House

Just across the street from Andy Warhol’s former residence, you’ll find a dignified mansion with a Beaux-Arts style limestone facade. This year, it’s the home of the Kips Bay Decorator Show House, New York’s pre-eminent designer showcase. We visited last week and compiled exclusive tips from some of the designers.

Thom Filicia

Thom Filicia wanted this room, which he called “A Study in Style,” to blur the lines between the public and private space. He created two separate areas with a desk for working and a sofa for lounging and entertaining.

Thom’s tip: “The space was really about the layering of textures and materials – even though the space has a consistent color tone that makes the space feel serene and relaxed, the textures and materials create a depth and layered sophistication.”

Alessandra Branca

The Arthur Sachs mansion doesn’t have a family room, so Alessandra Branca made it her mission to ensure that the living room would be a comfortable space to relax. Many pieces in the room are in an elegant Asian style, and she also added a casual element with a slip-covered chair, modern linen sofa and paisley lampshades.

Alessandra’s tip: “Things should be owned. They should not own you. Your home should be like your clothes – if it’s not comfortable, you won’t want to wear it.”

Charles Pavarini III - Pavarini Design

Though Pavarini Design’s lounge was called “Midnight Manhattan,” the room was anything but dark. Pavarini is known for creating a dramatic effect with lighting, and in this space, a room that could have easily skewed toward gloomy and flat was masterfully illuminated with state-of-the-art LED and OLED systems.

Pavarini Design’s tip: “Everything must be dimmable to prevent glare and to set the mood. Place a small floor-mounted spotlight under a plant or behind a sculpture for dramatic effect. Vary your lighting: lamps, overheads, sconces, and task lighting to create interest in the source of light.”

David Phoenix

David Phoenix filled this peaceful bedroom with soft shades of gray and neutral patterns. Though there are multiple prints all being used within a small space – plaids, damasks, a traditional rug – they don’t compete with each other because of their similarity in tone.

David’s tip: “I layered a lot of the same color and tone – I wanted it to be restful. In a bedroom, people should have whatever is luxurious to them. Surround yourself with things that are beautiful to you.”

Alan Tanksley

In his “Gentleman’s Study,” Alan Tanksley honored Pavlos Papageorgiou, the husband of friend Alexa Hampton, with a subtle Grecian theme. Using creative items like a cork sculpture of the Temple of Athena at Paestum and Greek key trimmed pillows, he paid homage to his muse without going overboard into the Aegean Sea.

Alan’s tip: “The theme is a study/retreat, and in this case, not just a place to work but to relax within the same space. The furniture layout and the fabrics I chose, such as de Le Cuona and Kravet, allow its users to sink into a restful mind while escaping other hectic environments. Not overloading your eyes with too many ‘extra’ things is a gift and an important tool that many people never master, ie. send in the pros.”

Den Interior Design by Thom Filicia

Masculine Decor from Top Interior Designers

Super Bowl Sunday is almost here, so we rounded up some manly rooms by top interior designers who have created spaces that are perfect for that special guy (or little guy) in your life.

THOM FILICIA

This den designed by Thom Filicia incorporates masculine elements like herringbone, clean industrialized sconces and antler wall art. The room’s color scheme is mainly (gender) neutral with pops of muted reds and blues.

If you’ve got a little boy in the family, this fun bedroom by Keith Baltimore is great for imaginary safari adventures. Baltimore has hung panels of fabric from the ceiling to one wall, which makes the space feel like a tent. Remember that boys will be boys, so we recommend choosing indoor/outdoor fabrics for children’s rooms because they can be washed.

Thom Filicia’s Exclusive Tips : How to Decorate Like a Pro

We had the pleasure of interviewing A-List designer Thom Filicia, most known for his role on the Emmy-Award winning show Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, who has really brought American decor to the forefront with what he dubs New-American Style. “It’s about a simplification of elements. I take design principles from places like Europe that are typically more formal and distill them into something less ceremonial or decorative that’s more approachable—just like the American lifestyle.”

Check out the expert tips he shared with us on how to decorate your home like a pro!

Thom Filicia Head Shot

Effortless Flow From Room to Room

Thom believes when you’re decorating a home, you need to think about the transition from room to room. In the home below, Thom uses the color black as a unifying aspect. In the room just off the main sitting area the walls are a luxurious ebony, and in the living room he carries in the color as accents on the french doors, lamp shades and area rug border.

Tip: “A home’s decor should read like a good book–the chapters are different, but there’s a narrative that ties it together. Each room can tell its own story, but use common threads and elements like the same light fixtures, door hardware and base boards throughout your house to connect it as a whole.”

HOW TO TAKE DECORATING RISKS

This living room makes a statement with its deep indigo walls and matching sofa–a trick that makes any small space feel larger. We love how Thom chose artwork in similar shades of blue so the pieces meld into the wall rather than compete with it. The whole space feels current yet comfortable due to the combination of traditional elements like the warm Oriental area rug and wood paneling.

Tip: “Very often people are afraid of doing something different when decorating.  Sometimes you have to take that risk–if you love the idea of it, but are afraid of it, it means you need to go for it. It’s all about pushing boundaries while still staying within your comfort zone.”

THE BEST COLOR SCHEME TO DECORATE WITH

Thom says a room should reflect your personality, and in this particular space, his naturally warm and confident charisma shines through, balanced with his client’s individuality. His work often features cool neutrals punctuated with small pops of color in accessories. Here he layers texture to add dimension, from the wallpaper to the velvet sofa, and then brings in color with the apricot leather wing back chairs, pillows and lampshade.

Tip: “A combination of greys, blues and greens is my foundation–I always gravitate towards this sophisticated and timeless palette. It works in a lot of different environments, and there’s a serenity to it that’s pleasing to nearly every person’s eye. I love it with interesting pops of color or black.”

Mixing Decorating Styles Like a Master

Old can be new again when you bring a different take on it. Here, Thom has infused life into klismos chairs, a design that dates back to ancient Greece, by re-imagining them with a cutout back. He uses juxtaposing materials, like the matte wrought iron chandelier, shining mercury glass vase and rough-hewn tree branch.

Tip: “Good design is all about using traditional items but doing them in a new way that makes them fresh and interesting. It’s a balancing act that’s totally dependent on mixing materials—modern elements with traditional elements, machine made with handmade, shiny things next to matte things, refined versus raw, new and old—all of these create wonderful combinations that play off of one another. The look is given several dimensions and it makes it uniquely uncomplicated.”

Designer Inspiration: Behind the Collections

Where do designers get the inspiration for their collections? We got the scoop from Nate Berkus, John Robshaw, Thom Filicia, Kelly Wearstler and Eileen Kathryn Boyd on what drives their work and gets them excited to design:

Nate Berkus Design Inspiration
Nate Berkus, former daytime talk show host & current owner of the Nate Berkus Associates interior design firm, pulled inspiration from his travels when putting together his first collection for Fabricut. Sprinkled with Moroccan-themes and rich color, this modern line looks as though it was inspired by a vacation to an exotic place. “I always come back from a trip with a ton of new ideas,” Nate says. When he isn’t traveling, Nate looks to art, architecture, and history for design insight. Check out some of his latest patterns for Fabricut:

John Robshaw Interior Design Inspiration

A world traveler at heart, textile designer John Robshaw has scoured the globe, including Uzbekestan, Lima, and Bolivia, to get ideas for his patterns. After drawing from vibrant cultures, John then “goes out on a limb,” thriving on experimentation. Check out his collection for Duralee, which holds true to his global aesthetic:

Thom Filicia Interior Decor Inspiration

Thom Filicia has been drawing on everything he could get his hands on (much to the dismay of his parents) since he was young.  “It’s funny, I look back, all the things I got in trouble for when I was a kid, you know, drawing on my desk or moving things around the house that I didn’t like are now actually what I do for a living.”  The New-American designer known for revamping homes on Queer Eye for the Straight Guy follows the motto, “What inspires you, inspires me,” in that he looks to interesting aspects of the clients with whom he’s working to spark ideas. Thom also loves timeless fabrics, and when creating his latest line for Kravet, he started with this in mind, and then injected it with color and texture to create an “incredibly fresh and cool interior.” Check out some of his collection:

Kelly Wearstler Design Inspiration

Kelly Wearstler, the popular designer and esteemed judge on Bravo’s reality show Top Design, draws inspiration from vintage pieces. “I love things that are old and have more soul and are spirited.” Her anti-minimalist style, dubbed “maximalist,” echos the glamour of bygone eras like ’70s disco and is apparent in her latest collection for Groundworks. When describing her design process, Wearstler explains, “It changes. Everything starts with an idea…Then, I take that thinking and do vibe boards and I’ll put inspiration together and then sketch.” Check out some of Kelly’s latest designs:

Eilieen Kathryn Boyd Interior Decor Inspiration

Known for her color expertise,  influential New York interior designer Eileen Kathryn Boyd draws upon art to inspire her work. She especially finds Georgia O’Keeffe’s & Kandinsky’s abstract pieces to be particularly illuminating when creating patterns. Boyd is also known for bringing the latest fashion trends to interior design, seamlessly melding the two worlds. Check out some of Eileen’s colorful collection for Duralee:

Christiane Lemieux, founder & creative director of Dwell Studio, is always pushing design limits. Her latest collection, Decorative Modern, does just this with strong patterns, like Vreeland – Aquatint, that draw from disco and art deco glamour. Large geometrics, colorful chinoiserie, and playful animal themes come together in unexpected, style-setting combinations.

Nate Berkus’ first collection for Fabricut is as classic as they come. Nate focused on neutrals because ” they are so versatile and are a great place to start before layering in bolder colors.” When it comes to mixing patterns, Nate says, “For a big piece of furniture, a solid neutral is always a safe bet. You can then add patterned pillows or a bold throw to bring in color and add a bit of drama.” We like the pop of Cermak – Pacifica.

How to Mix Patterns Like a Pro

There’s a trend popping up among designers: Mixing patterns! Thanks to these celebrity designers’ latest collections and tips, you don’t have to be a design genius to get the look. Check them out:

Neutral Ground

You’ll notice a general rule for mixing patterns, no matter who the designer is: Greys and neutrals are your friends. Whether it’s a whole room filled with neutral patterns or just used as a solid base, the natural hues keep the look from being too schizophrenic. Here, Kelly Wearstler’s home uses absolutely no solids, yet it looks balanced because everything falls into the tan, white, black or grey family.

Pull From the Busiest Pattern…

Pull colors from the busiest pattern you would like to use when choosing other prints for the room. Here Nate Berkus used hues from the yellow, grey, and blue ikat fabric upholstered on the ottomans for the chevron, medallion, and striped fabrics in the room.

…Or Tie it In with Accessories

Sometimes all you need to tie together patterns in two different colors, like the green and orange pictured here, are a few accessories. The red flowers and ikat chest at the foot of the bed help to unify the room.

Mix Large Geometrics

When mixing bold geometrics of similar scale, it’s best to only use two or three patterns, allowing one to be neutral (light grey is lovely) so that the two do not compete for the eye’s attention. Leave the rest up to textured solids that add interest without stealing the show.

Design Trend: Fabulous Faux Bois

Design Trend: Fabulous Faux Bois
Faux Bois: French for false wood. Refers to the artistic imitation of wood or wood grains.

Faux Bois is an increasingly popular look for furniture, decor, fashion, and even electronics. This unique motif is, according to Elle Decor, “suddenly hip, showing up in glamorous new guises and unlikely colors.” DecoratorsBest could not agree more! Turn over a new leaf this Fall and update your interiors using this woodsy design in fun colors for an edgier look or neutral colors for a softer feel. Appealing as a textured woven fabric and printed or textured wallpaper, faux bois is versatile enough to complement both rustic and contemporary decor.

Woodland Walls

Create a sanctuary with a colorful daybed and neutral fabrics. Enhance the soothing atmosphere with Nobilis’s “Papier Bois – Chene Paille.” Subtle color gradation within the grain adds depth to the space and harmonizes the different shades of beige throughout the room. Head east into the Bamboo wilderness of Asia with Phillip Jeffries“Vinyl Bamboo Forest.” This wallpaper imitates the unmistakable look of bamboo without the high cost or challenging installation of real lumber. Relax surrounded by earthy colors and wallpaper that brings the serenity of the forest into your home.

Funky Faus Bois

Spice up your interiors with brightly colored faux bois fabrics from John Robshaw for Duralee, Fadini Borghi, and Thom Filicia for Kravet. John Robshaw’s “Chun – Moss” chenille offers an elegant interpretation of the teal fabric featured here. “Chun” can be used for the occasional duvet and is excellent as an upholstery fabric.

Colorful faux bois jacquards are great for contemporary bedding. Try Fadini Borghi’s vibrant silk jacquard, “Fabio – Topaze” for drapes. Fabio is a moire available in attention grabbing chartreuse and red.

Vivid colors enliven and make a room more inviting. Add bursts of color and texture to a stark living room with Thom Filicia’s  “Lawrence – Citron.” Upholster your headboard with “Lawrence” and wake up every morning in a thicket of sunshine infused bark.

Subtle Striations

Accessorize a stately home with elegant fabrics that add the illusion of natural wood and complement timeless decor.

Phillip Gorrivan for Highland Court’s “London Plane faux bois is a chic rendition of the wood grain motif. Subtle striations in the weave make this fabric more sophisticated, perfect for a refined study or sitting room.

Love the look but aren’t ready to commit your club chairs to this trend? “London Plane – Nickel” accent pillows let you indulge your inner Thoreau and get back to nature without sacrificing your traditional style.
