How to Mix Styles for the Brooklyn Brownstone Look

As a historic borough and the epicenter of the affluent artisan movement, Brooklyn is home to a unique design style that effortlessly combines pre-war architecture and organic, modern décor. Interested in recreating the look in your home? Read on for our tips!

Use Molding Panels to Frame Modern Wallpaper

Park Slope brownstone with Greek key wallpaper by Brooklyn Home Co

In this Park Slope brownstone, The Brooklyn Home Company highlighted the wall paneling by lining each rectangle with a tone-on-tone Greek key wallpaper pattern. Though all the original moldings are preserved, the space feels fresh and current, thanks to graphic prints and bright colors.

If you don’t happen to reside in a 200-year-old building, you can still get the look! Molding panels are relatively easy to install, and using them to frame out wallpaper is a budget-friendly way to add a luxe, custom element to your home.

Combine Mid-Century and Transitional

Cobble Hill townhouse by Blair Harris Interior Design

Blair Harris Interior Design kept the parquet flooring and marble mantelpiece in this Cobble Hill townhouse, but modernized the space with mid-century elements like a wood and brass wall unit, a brass six-arm chandelier and a Danish-inspired coffee table. The neutral armchair and linen-slipcovered sofa keep the room from going too mod, and the botanical wallpaper provides a light and airy contrast to the dark built-ins.

Cobble Hill townhouse by Blair Harris Interior Design

Mid-century modern décor looks fabulous paired with pre-war details, but if you don’t want to dive all the way into the 1950s/1960s look, transitional furniture (a mix between traditional and contemporary) will even things out.

Find a Unifying Element

Chelsea townhouse living room with marble mantelpiece via The New York Times

This relaxed-chic home is technically in Chelsea, not Brooklyn, but it so clearly personifies the traditional-meets-organic vibe that we had to include it anyway. The 1950s rattan ottoman, Scandinavian chairs and custom marble coffee table are perfectly balanced with an antique mirror, oversized original windows, and a white oak sofa.

When mixing different styles of furniture, it helps to unify the pieces with at least one element. In this case, it’s the height – everything is low and laid-back.

Keep It Simple

When the color palette is limited, it allows for more creativity in patterns and styles, as seen in this sun-kissed townhouse. Natural light pours in from both ends of the building, and the warm woods, antiqued gold tones and soft yellows feel right at home. With only black and white as accents, it’s easy to combine a tribal rug and a crystal chandelier. They’re united by the consistency in hues.

To replicate this look in your home, choose one consistent color family for your furniture and finishes, then layer in contrasting elements like art and throw pillows to your heart’s content.

Game of Thrones: Decor Inspired by the Women of Westeros

Now that the Game of Thrones Season 5 finale has come and gone, it’s time to reflect upon the events of the past 10 episodes. The men of Westeros had their important roles to play, but this season, it was the women who really moved the plot forward. We were inspired by their courage, their resilience, and … OK, fine – their fashion sense, too.

Read on without fear of spoilers. We’re looking at decor inspired by the women of Game of Thrones.

The Sand Snakes

Inspired by the Sand Snakes of Game of Thrones - Orange Moroccan bedroom

When this deadly Dornish trio isn’t out seeking vengeance, the Sand Snakes dress in the style of the region: light, loose garments in shades of yellow, orange and pink. Adornments include delicate beading and woven ikat. We can see Obara, Nymeria and Tyene resting in this room after a long day of stealth, sun and revenge.

Daenerys Targaryen

Inspired by Daenerys Targaryen of Game of Thrones - White modern living room

Having graduated from the leather garb required of a Dothraki Khaleesi, Daenerys Targaryen has recently started dressing like a queen. In her case, this means contemporary gowns with clean lines and monochromatic elegance. Daenerys is too busy ruling Meereen to find time for accessories, you know? We think that if she were decorating her living room today, she’d keep it simple and functional with a few stylish elements, like the modern damask wallpaper above.

Margaery Tyrell

Inspired by Margaery Tyrell of Game of Thrones - Bedroom with blue and gold floral wallpaper and fabric

Hailing from a fertile region called Highgarden, Margaery Tyrell and her family are represented by the sigil of a golden rose. Margaery’s gowns often feature a subtle floral design, and she displays her wealth with luxurious blue silks and brocades. We’ve never seen Margaery’s childhood bedroom, but we imagine it might feature botanical prints, an elegant mirrored nightstand and abundant flower motifs.

As the former queen of Westeros and a daughter of the powerful House Lannister, Cersei is formidable and fearless. She’d have no qualms about mixing red snakeskin hood chairs with damask panels, metallic Art Deco wallpaper, and a peacock blue settee. Can’t you just see her holding court in this bold dining room?

Summer Decor Tips: Update Your Home for the New Season

June has arrived, and we’re opening the windows and letting a warm breeze breathe life into our homes. Ready to prepare your home for summer? We’ve got a few tips!

Mix Neutrals & Bright Colors in Lightweight Fabrics

Dining room with slipcovered chairs by Bennett Leifer

Linen slipcovers in soft whites always make us think “beach house,” and we love the way designer Bennett Leifer added color with summery striped cushions.

Bennett’s tip: “I develop the palettes [for each room in a house] at the same time, making sure there is a consistency in color and texture. I then take each space in a slightly different direction to reflect how the space will be used. For example, the dining room received colorful Missoni print dining chair cushions, reflecting the fresh flowers and foods that would eventually be displayed on the dining table and kitchen counters.”

With silk damask walls and an antique Oushak carpet, the living room in this Italian apartment is full of dark, serious decor. The sheer, billowing linen curtains let sunshine pour through the room and allow a generous view of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

For your home, try putting your heavy drapes away for the season, and welcome the summer sun with a lightweight sheer replacement.

Reduce Clutter with Minimal Accessories

We love accessories as much as the next interior design junkie, but a relaxed summer room should feel easy and laid-back. Clear clutter from your room – and your mind – and try a neutral palette for a living room that’s just begging to be napped in.

Go Low-Maintenace with Indoor/Outdoor Fabrics

Red kids bedroom designer by Cecily Mendell

As the sun gets stronger and the kids start traipsing in with wet bathing suits, your home needs a little extra durability. Indoor/outdoor fabrics have come a long way in recent years – no more stiff, scratchy textiles – and they’re a great way to protect your favorite decor items from fading and mildew.

In this kids’ bedroom, designer Cecily Mendell boldly used a variety of patterns. “I love to mix and match fabrics that you wouldn’t typically see together,” Cecily told us. “The trick is making sure they complement each other – the colors don’t have to all match. Be brave and experiment – your eye will tell you if they work.”

Kips Bay Decorator Show House 2015 - Charles Pavarini Midnight Manhattan Lounge

Exclusive Tips from Thom Filicia & More Designers from the 2015 Kips Bay Decorator Show House

Just across the street from Andy Warhol’s former residence, you’ll find a dignified mansion with a Beaux-Arts style limestone facade. This year, it’s the home of the Kips Bay Decorator Show House, New York’s pre-eminent designer showcase. We visited last week and compiled exclusive tips from some of the designers.

Thom Filicia

Thom Filicia wanted this room, which he called “A Study in Style,” to blur the lines between the public and private space. He created two separate areas with a desk for working and a sofa for lounging and entertaining.

Thom’s tip: “The space was really about the layering of textures and materials – even though the space has a consistent color tone that makes the space feel serene and relaxed, the textures and materials create a depth and layered sophistication.”

Alessandra Branca

The Arthur Sachs mansion doesn’t have a family room, so Alessandra Branca made it her mission to ensure that the living room would be a comfortable space to relax. Many pieces in the room are in an elegant Asian style, and she also added a casual element with a slip-covered chair, modern linen sofa and paisley lampshades.

Alessandra’s tip: “Things should be owned. They should not own you. Your home should be like your clothes – if it’s not comfortable, you won’t want to wear it.”

Charles Pavarini III - Pavarini Design

Though Pavarini Design’s lounge was called “Midnight Manhattan,” the room was anything but dark. Pavarini is known for creating a dramatic effect with lighting, and in this space, a room that could have easily skewed toward gloomy and flat was masterfully illuminated with state-of-the-art LED and OLED systems.

Pavarini Design’s tip: “Everything must be dimmable to prevent glare and to set the mood. Place a small floor-mounted spotlight under a plant or behind a sculpture for dramatic effect. Vary your lighting: lamps, overheads, sconces, and task lighting to create interest in the source of light.”

David Phoenix

David Phoenix filled this peaceful bedroom with soft shades of gray and neutral patterns. Though there are multiple prints all being used within a small space – plaids, damasks, a traditional rug – they don’t compete with each other because of their similarity in tone.

David’s tip: “I layered a lot of the same color and tone – I wanted it to be restful. In a bedroom, people should have whatever is luxurious to them. Surround yourself with things that are beautiful to you.”

Alan Tanksley

In his “Gentleman’s Study,” Alan Tanksley honored Pavlos Papageorgiou, the husband of friend Alexa Hampton, with a subtle Grecian theme. Using creative items like a cork sculpture of the Temple of Athena at Paestum and Greek key trimmed pillows, he paid homage to his muse without going overboard into the Aegean Sea.

Alan’s tip: “The theme is a study/retreat, and in this case, not just a place to work but to relax within the same space. The furniture layout and the fabrics I chose, such as de Le Cuona and Kravet, allow its users to sink into a restful mind while escaping other hectic environments. Not overloading your eyes with too many ‘extra’ things is a gift and an important tool that many people never master, ie. send in the pros.”

Designer Fabrics & Wallpaper Add Elegance in the #OneRoomChallenge

DecoratorsBest in the OneRoomChallenge

This spring, DecoratorsBest was thrilled to sponsor the biannual #OneRoomChallenge, hosted by Linda at Calling It Home. Eight talented bloggers used fabric, wallpaper and pillows from our site to add color, depth and texture to their spaces. To us, it’s fascinating to see the way even small doses of designer products can lend sophistication and elegance to any room, no matter the size or setting.

Yesterday was the final reveal, and we couldn’t wait to see how each blogger put our products to use!

4 Unique Ways to Style Floral Decor

Florals have gone beyond their traditional reputation and are now being used in all sorts of decorating styles. From glam to retro-chic, these 4 fresh ways to decorate with floral prints will have you looking at blossoms in a whole new way.

Bright & Airy

Watercolor Fashion to Decor Spring 2014

From Runway to Home: 4 Ways to Decorate With Watercolor Prints

In September, the New York Fashion Week Spring 2014 runways were graced with watercolor prints that transported us to a romantic dream. Check out our four ways to bring these on-trend soft & blurry patterns into your space:

Watercolor trend

1. Peachy Keen

Warm peach, apricot and salmon hues are ideal ways to take on the trend because they’re flattering to any skin tone. Whether you’re wearing it or decorating a room with it, the hue adds an inner glow and is close enough to a neutral to work well with most color schemes. Try it in an aqueous stripe or floral pattern that looks like painted brush strokes.

2. Green with Envy

Designer Bibhu Mahapatra sent looks down the Spring 2014 runway that used clothing as a canvas, covering it in oversized green painterly florals. Recreate the look at home by using a table cloth with blurred flowers on it. We like the combination of blue, green & yellow, so either use a pattern that incorporates all of these hues, or bring them in with a flower arrangement and/or colorful dishes & flatware.

3. Neutral Territory

Christian Siriano, former Project Runway winner, rolled out watercolor botanical looks for Spring 2014, too. Instead of doing watercolor head-to-toe, he opted to use it as an accent against white & cream. If you have a neutral room at home (filled with beiges, creams or whites), this is the way to go. Simply add in a pillow or upholster an ottoman with a painterly blossoms, and you’ll instantly be on trend for 2014!

4. Mixer

Love layering colors and prints in your outfits? Then mixing several watercolor prints together is the right route for you! Take inspiration from BCBG Max Azria’s dress and combine several flowery watercolor patterns in a room. Turn your bedroom into an enchanted garden by using the prints as bedding, pillows, a lamp shade—even try it in a picture frame. This look works best against white or grey walls.

Themed

Valentine’s day-themed decorations are a playful way to celebrate the holiday. This room uses shades of pink that would work any time of the year, but for the holiday, temporarily dress up lampshades! Simply wrap the shade in a sweet wallpaper (we prefer the hot pink lips below), pull it tightly around the lampshade and secure ends together with glue (or tape). Voila! A festive look that can be removed after V Day.
