4 Ways to Freshen Up a Bedroom with Ticking Stripes

Traditionally used in colonial days for its ability to keep feathers inside pillowcases and bedding, mattress ticking is back in the bedroom, and in a much grander way. Take a look at these beautiful ways to use the stripe in your bedroom:

Floor to Ceiling…to Bed!

Carrying the same ticking stripe pattern throughout a room (i.e. on the walls and bedding) gives the appearance of a larger space in a narrow room. The key here is in the details in order to tie the look together. Trim the top and corners of upholstered walls with cord, echoing the same trim pattern on solid linen drapery. Here, the pillows on the bed are made into a square pattern by sewing together 4 triangular pieces of the same ticking stripe used in the room. Add a little paisley in a similar color family to break up the stripes.

Mix Widths & Modern Accessories

If you’re not quite ready for a matching ticking stripe look, mix two different ticking stripes! Choose patterns that are different enough in width to distinguish the two from a distance, but similar enough in color for the them to make sense together. To modernize the look, add in some contemporary pieces, like an art deco-inspired sunburst mirror and red floral pillows with a crisp white background.

Shabby Chic with Checks

This guest bedroom has a cool lived-in charm with a combination of colorful distressed checks and ticking stripes. Antique furniture covered in a variety of colors and degrees of pigment add shabby chic dimension to the room. To top off the look, adorn walls with pieces of toile fabric in vintage frames.

Native Flair

In early American colonial days, Native American patterns and designs influenced some of the decor used by settlers. Swathe a canopy bed in ticking stripes with tribal touches, accenting with deep red fringe trim at the top of the frame. Build volume with a solid linen in a golden color.
