Preppy Home Decor: What’s Your Style?

With Wimbledon in full swing, tennis fans and celebrities across the globe are donning their preppiest attire and heading to London to watch the tournament. To join in on the festivities, we’re taking a look at the different types of preppy home decor. Read on!

Palm Beach Preppy

In various beach locales across the country – Palm Beach, Southampton, Newport – sun worshipers fill their homes with saturated, bold shades of hot pink and emerald green. Brands like Lilly Pulitzer reign supreme alongside palm prints, pom poms and contrasting trim. In this space, designer Anne Hepfer fully embraced the tropical theme, featuring fanned-out leaves in the drapery, upholstered headboard and bed skirt.

Traditional Preppy

On the more restrained end of the spectrum, fans of traditional preppy decor often employ neutral stripes, dark plaids and limited color palettes. When it comes to preppy brands, Ralph Lauren is king. In this dining area, designer Windsor Smith brightened up the space with white Chinese Chippendale chairs and an unexpected pop of yellow.

Eclectic Preppy

For the preppy decorator who wants to punch things up, take a cue from designer Sam Allen, who shared the room above in honor of Wimbledon.

Sam’s tip: “I love the combination of navy and white because it is so versatile. It goes with just about everything! In addition, stripes add depth and interest to a room. A great and simple way to achieve this is to use the pattern on a headboard and match it to the wall, adding a ton of character to the space.”

To ensure a perfect match, select a striped fabric and ask DecoratorsBest to have it backed for you.

Garden Preppy

The garden preppy look shares elements with the Palm Beach preppy style, but it’s a softer version, incorporating floral and chintz patterns, less saturated shades, and generally, a more subdued aesthetic. It’s often seen as a feminine decor style, but as we all know, real men wear pink – and they decorate with it, too!

Tips from Interior Designers: How to Enhance Your Home with the Color Grey

Since so many of you loved our post on how to enhance your home with neutral colors, we got the scoop from top designers, including Nate Berkus & American Dream Builders winner Lukas Machnik, on how to decorate with grey, one of the most popular colors in interior decor right now.

Nate Berkus

Nate Berkus is one of those designers that works with both colors and neutrals, but in his own living space gray is a “huge favorite.” Here, Nate anchors the space with a grey wool chesterfield sofa. He also adds pattern with a grey & white striped rug and sheen with silk drapery in a lighter shade. To balance the formality, he incorporates the natural, rugged texture of sea grass (the club chair), a theme that all of the designers in the post utilize.

Nate’s Tip: “The reason the sofa is the largest investment is because they’re not meant to be disposable. They’re meant to last for 20 years. So if you buy the most traditional one in a solid fabric, or the one with the cleanest lines, even if you’re a modernist, every time your tastes change it allows you a foundation to keep changing and letting your home evolve with your personality without having to go buy a new piece.”

Windsor Smith

This room by Windsor Smith has a European feeling to it with the French doors, classic crystal chandelier and “puddled” Douppioni silk drapery. What’s interesting, though, is that she has combined an ethereal ambiance with shabby-chic elements like the watercolor-esque walls and a naturally textured area rug. The room is really a layering of different eras, and it’s absolutely stunning.

Windsor’s Tip: “Blue and gray is my favorite color scheme. I use them in every project in one way or another. Any good color palate, including this one, needs a large dose of white to ground it. With rooms where you want more than one color, dilute the paint on the walls by 50 percent by adding pure white.”

Elsa Soyars

Designer Elsa Soyars really makes this neutral room work because she’s built in layers of texture. It’s a yin and yang of sensual versus tactile with the grey silk headboard, the textured gold wallpaper and linen drapery.  She has also added metal & granite-encrusted accessories for that hard/soft appeal.

Elsa’s Tip: “I typically work by instinct, and I do get inspired by color. Grey, in particular, has been a color I have been using–it’s neutral and mixes well with other neutral colors as well as purple, turquoise, green. My favorite color scheme lately is shades of grey, black, white, emerald green and other jewel tones.”

Lukas Machnik

Lukas Machnik uses mainly grey, white and black in his designs. Here, he’s made this modern living room feel both edgy and livable with natural materials like the wood bark sconces, leather stools and sisial rug. The black and white abstract painting is the focal point, and the different shades of gray complement, rather than compete with the piece.

Lukas’ Tip: “The best spaces are the ones that are quiet and don’t scream. When using neutral tones, select furniture that is timeless, successful in function, and organic/geometric in form. My aesthetic leans toward Minimalism – it’s about the balance of moods, and creating neutral spaces that highlight form and function.”

Pattern Play

This spring it’s all about pattern both on and off the runway. Floral, nautical and geometric prints are some of the trends in fabric we are seeing. Geometric patterns are great at drawing the eye, but you must be careful not to overwhelm. Scale of pattern is important for achieving that classic, chic look.

Like with fashion, it is important that the geometric pattern in your home be of scale. You don’t want the pattern to overpower the space. One area we are seeing a lot of growth in geometric patterns is in outdoor fabrics.  From Trina Turk for Schumacher to Windsor Smith for Kravet, geometric fabrics are a great way to add some interest and pizzazz to your outdoor living space.
