Preppy Home Decor: What’s Your Style?

With Wimbledon in full swing, tennis fans and celebrities across the globe are donning their preppiest attire and heading to London to watch the tournament. To join in on the festivities, we’re taking a look at the different types of preppy home decor. Read on!

Palm Beach Preppy

In various beach locales across the country – Palm Beach, Southampton, Newport – sun worshipers fill their homes with saturated, bold shades of hot pink and emerald green. Brands like Lilly Pulitzer reign supreme alongside palm prints, pom poms and contrasting trim. In this space, designer Anne Hepfer fully embraced the tropical theme, featuring fanned-out leaves in the drapery, upholstered headboard and bed skirt.

Traditional Preppy

On the more restrained end of the spectrum, fans of traditional preppy decor often employ neutral stripes, dark plaids and limited color palettes. When it comes to preppy brands, Ralph Lauren is king. In this dining area, designer Windsor Smith brightened up the space with white Chinese Chippendale chairs and an unexpected pop of yellow.

Eclectic Preppy

For the preppy decorator who wants to punch things up, take a cue from designer Sam Allen, who shared the room above in honor of Wimbledon.

Sam’s tip: “I love the combination of navy and white because it is so versatile. It goes with just about everything! In addition, stripes add depth and interest to a room. A great and simple way to achieve this is to use the pattern on a headboard and match it to the wall, adding a ton of character to the space.”

To ensure a perfect match, select a striped fabric and ask DecoratorsBest to have it backed for you.

Garden Preppy

The garden preppy look shares elements with the Palm Beach preppy style, but it’s a softer version, incorporating floral and chintz patterns, less saturated shades, and generally, a more subdued aesthetic. It’s often seen as a feminine decor style, but as we all know, real men wear pink – and they decorate with it, too!

How to Incorporate Geometrics into Every Room of Your Home

Geometric prints are forecasted to be one of the top trends of 2014. Check out our break down of how to use the angular patterns in each room of your home:

Foyer & Stairway

You can do things in a small space that you can’t do in a big one so an entryway, foyer or stairway is a great place to try a bold geometric wallpaper in either a strong print or color. Black & white geometrics are more versatile as you can create two different styles depending on whether you pair the look with dark or light furniture. If you’re using a pattern with a huge scale, keep wall hangings and furniture to a minimum, allowing the wall to be the focal point.

Living Room

If you’re looking for a quick pick-me-up in your living room, go for a geometric rug. It will bring your home up to the latest trend without breaking the bank. A dark rug will ground the look, so choose something in a deep hue that complements the colors you’re already using in the room (Hint: navy, black & brown are great neutral go-to’s that work with almost anything). We like a big pattern with a bit of white in it.

Bedroom

There are a couple of ways that you could incorporate geometrics into your bedroom. Throw pillows quickly liven up the bed while a headboard upholstered in an intricate geometric trellis makes a strong statement. We recommend using shades of blue—anywhere from navy to pastel—for its calming properties.

Bathroom

Because bathrooms tend to lean toward the simple side in terms of decor, a little can go a long way in this space. Use a subtle grey & white geometric print for a window shade or valance to bring in a little style. Stick with simple white in the rest of the area for a fresh, clean look.

Kitchen

Add a little pep to your kitchen by covering the seats of bar stools (or cushions of eat-in chairs) with an angular pattern in bright red, a color that stimulates the appetite. Consider slip covering or using an outdoor fabric so that spills, which happen more often in the kitchen, are easier to clean.

Dining Room

Softer, more organic ethnic shapes are also a hot trend for 2014. Combine this with the geometric look by covering your dining chairs in an abstract pattern that references geo shapes for a different, eclectic take on the traditionally symmetrical pattern.
