Preppy Home Decor: What’s Your Style?

With Wimbledon in full swing, tennis fans and celebrities across the globe are donning their preppiest attire and heading to London to watch the tournament. To join in on the festivities, we’re taking a look at the different types of preppy home decor. Read on!

Palm Beach Preppy

In various beach locales across the country – Palm Beach, Southampton, Newport – sun worshipers fill their homes with saturated, bold shades of hot pink and emerald green. Brands like Lilly Pulitzer reign supreme alongside palm prints, pom poms and contrasting trim. In this space, designer Anne Hepfer fully embraced the tropical theme, featuring fanned-out leaves in the drapery, upholstered headboard and bed skirt.

Traditional Preppy

On the more restrained end of the spectrum, fans of traditional preppy decor often employ neutral stripes, dark plaids and limited color palettes. When it comes to preppy brands, Ralph Lauren is king. In this dining area, designer Windsor Smith brightened up the space with white Chinese Chippendale chairs and an unexpected pop of yellow.

Eclectic Preppy

For the preppy decorator who wants to punch things up, take a cue from designer Sam Allen, who shared the room above in honor of Wimbledon.

Sam’s tip: “I love the combination of navy and white because it is so versatile. It goes with just about everything! In addition, stripes add depth and interest to a room. A great and simple way to achieve this is to use the pattern on a headboard and match it to the wall, adding a ton of character to the space.”

To ensure a perfect match, select a striped fabric and ask DecoratorsBest to have it backed for you.

Garden Preppy

The garden preppy look shares elements with the Palm Beach preppy style, but it’s a softer version, incorporating floral and chintz patterns, less saturated shades, and generally, a more subdued aesthetic. It’s often seen as a feminine decor style, but as we all know, real men wear pink – and they decorate with it, too!

4 Unique Ways to Style a Blue & White Room

Blue & white has been a popular color combination for decades, and it’s seeing a resurgence today. It’s not surprise, because the duo has an innate ability to adapt to nearly any design style. Check out these 4 completely different ways to style a room with blue and white:

Masculine Glam

Blue is one of those colors that both men and women like, so it’s a great choice when deciding upon a color scheme that both you and your guy will feel comfortable with. Start with white walls, a hot trend for 2014, and then use a cobalt blue fabric on your largest piece of furniture. Bring in the glam factor with luxe textures like silk & suede, and balance it with masculine steel blues (almost to the point of grey) and a very subtle herringbone pattern. We like how the chairs in this space mix masculine & feminine, too–they are covered with a black & white toile print on the back and a grey pattern in the front.

Asian-Inspired

Blue chinoiserie is a great way to add drama to your bedroom without too much work. The pattern speaks for itself, allowing you to keep your plain white walls as a canvas, and the hues keep it calm enough for a sleeping area. Make a statement by using it on the headboard or a decorative screen behind the bed, a bed skirt and a chair.

Coastal

Blue & white signifies relaxation, so it makes sense that the carefree coastal decorating style is often done in these colors. Give an outdoor area that laid back vibe with awning, ticking, bar code & pencil stripes in a mix of blueberry & indigo blues. Switch it up with a couple of floral pillows for variety, and accent with wicker, seashells and a well-stocked bar cart!

Eclectic

Just because a room is predominately blue & white doesn’t mean that it can’t lean towards the eclectic side. The definition of eclectic is “selecting or choosing from various sources,” so do just that with various textures, patterns, shades and furniture styles. Go for everything from silk & suede to linen and use many shades of blue, from navy to aqua. We like how this room has matched the glossy Carolina blue walls to the hue in the ikat chairs. Temper all of the blue with just a touch of dusty, faded pink.

Spring Decorating: 4 Refreshing Color Schemes

Spring is just a few weeks away, so now’s the time to start thinking about freshening up your home for the eagerly awaited season. Check out these four cheerful color schemes that will revitalize your space:

Color Scheme #1 – Feature Color: Radiant Orchid; Accents: Plum, Celery Green, Cream

The color of 2014 is Radiant Orchid, and if there was ever a time to add it to your home, it would be Spring. Build around the bright hue with a deep plum, which anchors the space, and accent with cream & a muted celery green.

Color Scheme #2 – Feature Color: Turquoise; Accents: Dazzling Blue, Yellow, Lime Green

Bright, saturated colors play well with turquoise, creating the feeling of blue skies, budding flowers and warm sunshine. Start with neutral furniture and build the color around that. Paint or cover your walls in a turquoise hue (we like the added texture of grasscloth wallpaper) and bring in fun floral, ethnic & geometric patterns that contain lime green, yellow and dazzling blue. Pillows are an easy way to do this!

Color Scheme #3 – Feature Color: Mint Green; Accents: Hot Pink, Fern Green, Ecru

Pastels like mint are always popular as the weather warms up, but this year do it differently by pairing it with a hot pink and fern green. Add these shades to your home with floral fabric & wallpaper panels, and also with natural elements like peonies. This color scheme looks especially fresh against a canvas of white walls.

Color Scheme #4 – Feature & Accent Colors: Grey, in many shades

Grey is one of the most-used hues in decor, and we can see why—it’s versatile and creates a sense of calm. Take it up a notch this season by building a whole room around different shades of grey (you could even say 50 Shades of Grey…). Use a variety of charcoal with lavender undertones, slate and dove grey in both solids and patterns. Multiple textures will add dimension to the space—linen is a perfect addition to make the look more appropriate for the season.

Asian Decor Modern How to incorporate into your home

4 Modern Ways to Incorporate Asian Patterns into Your Home

Asian-influenced looks are forecasted to be a top trend this year. Incorporate a modern take on the look into your home with these four ideas:

1. Hang Asian-Inspired Panels

Whether it’s a wallpaper or fabric, hanging panels of Eastern patterns on the wall is a contemporary way to bring in a touch of the Asian look. We love how the wall in the dining room below matches the Lily Pulitzer dragon pattern (in her signature bright hue), but you can also use panels to dress up a white wall. See how to make fabric panels here.

2. Asian Toile in Bright or Unexpected Color Combos

Most people consider toile to be a traditional pattern, but an Asian toile done in a bright color refreshes a space. Combine it with unexpected hues, like in this breakfast nook, where the unusual, yet cool teal leather on the banquette contrasts with red toile wallpaper. Other Asian-inspired decor items, like a minimalist chandelier reminiscent of a Chinese lantern, complete the look.

3. Small Eclectic Accents

Chinoiserie patterns fit right into eclectic rooms. The key is to add just a touch here and there, and to mix it with clean patterns that have more structure to them, like plaid. This bedroom uses Schumacher’s beloved Chiang Mai Dragon fabric on the head and footboard of the bed. The pattern ties in with the rest of the room because of the red pieces (pillow & TV stand) while juxtaposing features like the white exposed brick & wood diversify the space.

4. Use Bamboo Motifs

Bamboo is the perfect motif to add a contemporary look to any space. Scalamandre’s Bamboo Trellis wallpaper can take on many looks, from elegant to quirky. Go white on white (with gold accents) or make it funky with celery hues and unconventional art.
