Preppy Home Decor: What’s Your Style?

With Wimbledon in full swing, tennis fans and celebrities across the globe are donning their preppiest attire and heading to London to watch the tournament. To join in on the festivities, we’re taking a look at the different types of preppy home decor. Read on!

Palm Beach Preppy

Pink and green preppy tropical bedroom via Anne Hepfer

In various beach locales across the country – Palm Beach, Southampton, Newport – sun worshipers fill their homes with saturated, bold shades of hot pink and emerald green. Brands like Lilly Pulitzer reign supreme alongside palm prints, pom poms and contrasting trim. In this space, designer Anne Hepfer fully embraced the tropical theme, featuring fanned-out leaves in the drapery, upholstered headboard and bed skirt.

Traditional Preppy

On the more restrained end of the spectrum, fans of traditional preppy decor often employ neutral stripes, dark plaids and limited color palettes. When it comes to preppy brands, Ralph Lauren is king. In this dining area, designer Windsor Smith brightened up the space with white Chinese Chippendale chairs and an unexpected pop of yellow.

Eclectic Preppy

For the preppy decorator who wants to punch things up, take a cue from designer Sam Allen, who shared the room above in honor of Wimbledon.

Sam’s tip: “I love the combination of navy and white because it is so versatile. It goes with just about everything! In addition, stripes add depth and interest to a room. A great and simple way to achieve this is to use the pattern on a headboard and match it to the wall, adding a ton of character to the space.”

To ensure a perfect match, select a striped fabric and ask DecoratorsBest to have it backed for you.

Garden Preppy

The garden preppy look shares elements with the Palm Beach preppy style, but it’s a softer version, incorporating floral and chintz patterns, less saturated shades, and generally, a more subdued aesthetic. It’s often seen as a feminine decor style, but as we all know, real men wear pink – and they decorate with it, too!

Spring Decorating: 4 Refreshing Color Schemes

Spring is just a few weeks away, so now’s the time to start thinking about freshening up your home for the eagerly awaited season. Check out these four cheerful color schemes that will revitalize your space:

Color Scheme #1 – Feature Color: Radiant Orchid; Accents: Plum, Celery Green, Cream

The color of 2014 is Radiant Orchid, and if there was ever a time to add it to your home, it would be Spring. Build around the bright hue with a deep plum, which anchors the space, and accent with cream & a muted celery green.

Color Scheme #2 – Feature Color: Turquoise; Accents: Dazzling Blue, Yellow, Lime Green

Bright, saturated colors play well with turquoise, creating the feeling of blue skies, budding flowers and warm sunshine. Start with neutral furniture and build the color around that. Paint or cover your walls in a turquoise hue (we like the added texture of grasscloth wallpaper) and bring in fun floral, ethnic & geometric patterns that contain lime green, yellow and dazzling blue. Pillows are an easy way to do this!

Color Scheme #3 – Feature Color: Mint Green; Accents: Hot Pink, Fern Green, Ecru

Pastels like mint are always popular as the weather warms up, but this year do it differently by pairing it with a hot pink and fern green. Add these shades to your home with floral fabric & wallpaper panels, and also with natural elements like peonies. This color scheme looks especially fresh against a canvas of white walls.

Color Scheme #4 – Feature & Accent Colors: Grey, in many shades

Grey is one of the most-used hues in decor, and we can see why—it’s versatile and creates a sense of calm. Take it up a notch this season by building a whole room around different shades of grey (you could even say 50 Shades of Grey…). Use a variety of charcoal with lavender undertones, slate and dove grey in both solids and patterns. Multiple textures will add dimension to the space—linen is a perfect addition to make the look more appropriate for the season.

Block Printing Being done

How Do They Do That?: The Process of Making Hand-Blocked Patterns

Block printing is considered to be one of the most artistic methods of adding prints to textiles. The process requires hours upon hours of love and care from the hand that does it, yet because of the astoundingly beautiful results, it is still widely used today.

It is difficult to say when the art of block printing began, but it is estimated to be thousands of years old, even as early as the 5th century B.C., with roots in Japan, China, and India. Then, the woodblock technique was used for printing both text and images (before the magic of automated printing presses). The process has not changed much with the passing of time—designs are first carved into blocks of wood or stone, which can take hours, even days.

In some cases, dyes or paints are hand made, as well, using pigment powders extracted from plants.

Indian Pigments for Dying

Dyes are either rolled onto blocks or the blocks are dipped into the dyes from a tray, and then firmly pressed onto the fabric or paper that is pulled tight to be sure of accurate printing. After dyeing, the fabric/paper is carefully hung to dry. If it is an intricate pattern, the outline is done first, then the rest is filled in, with the drying process being repeated after each layer is placed on the textile.

Fashion Week Round-Up: Top Looks from the Runway

Last week’s Fashion Week here in New York still has us reeling! Check out our favorite looks to grace the runways and how to recreate the look in your home:

Derek Lam’s Gingham

Derek Lam’s Spring collection has us sold on gingham. Normally a pattern associated with the rural girl-next-door aesthetic (think Mary Ann from Gilligan’s Island), Lam cast new light on the pattern with deep V-neck sack dresses, exposed bandeaus, and a combination of black and blue. For decor, we like how both Hervé Pierre, creative director of Carolina Herrera, and Katie Armour, Matchbook Magazine co-founder, both use gingham in unexpected ways, too. Pierre’s canopy bed and long drapes defy odds by giving gingham a romantic 18th century vibe, while Armour’s California living room gives a chic angle to the pattern with pinks walls, modern furniture and a touch of leopard print.

Peter Som & Rachel Comey’s Marble Prints

Swirly graphic marble prints were something fresh and new on the runways this season. Peter Som’s version looked surfer-girl/menswear cool (right down to the shoes) while Rachel Comey’s  ready-to-wear version was a bit more romantic. Get the look with a winding  pattern designed by Tina Turk or take a note from Kelly Wearstler’s caramel-hued marble walls.

Alberta Ferretti’s fashion show was a fiesta of bright satin ribbons inspired by traditional Mexican textiles and clothing in varying widths and silky textures. Get the look in your home by combining pops of stripes in pillows or throws and pair it with other strong colors on the walls and furniture.

Burberry Prorsum’s Polka Dots

Once relegated to kids’ bedrooms and play rooms, Burberry Prorsum’s version of polka dots is fresh, punchy, and all grown up. The over-sized scale of the pattern on blouses and laser cut leather dresses is bringing these spots to into the realm of chic. In a room, pair it with a pop of color like Burberry did with their handbags.

Outdoor Decor: Poolside Lounging

Hot weather calls for days spent by the pool. Check out our favorite poolside outdoor decor for this summer:

Bold ‘n Bright

Sherbet shades are synonymous with the summer season, and they look beautiful as a backdrop for a pool. Go for bold statement prints on cushions and pillows for a lively, tropical look. We love the casual, yet cool idea of creating a seating area with an arrangement of large pillows covered in outdoor fabric.

Summery Stripes

Whether you’re by the ocean, sea or pool, stripes always work. Play with various widths in black or red & white combinations, or go for a thin blue-green stripe. Keep the look simple and clean for a more nautical vibe, or warm it up with a paisley or soft chevron pattern.

Kips Bay Decorator Show House 2013

Kips Bay Decorator Show House is one of NYC’s spring highlights for interior design. Featuring nationally renowned interior designers, this show house brings to life many of the trends that we at DecoratorsBest have been discussing for the past few months.

Most of this year’s townhouse rooms were small and in poor condition before the designers waved their magic wands! Pushing their creative energies to the max, these ingenious decorators highlighted their talents by creating unique ceiling and wall treatments to conceal cracks and flaws. We particularly enjoyed seeing the myriad of details that give these rooms their extra-special finished and professional look. Check them out:

Soft Grays

Muted gray tones featured on sofas, wallcoverings and billowy drapery softened the tailored decor.

Color-Blocking & Metallic Influences

Color-blocking, this spring’s big trend, was prevalent in many of the rooms. Metallic influences, particularly in ’70s-inspired coffee tables and lamps, added sheen to the darker rooms.
