Preppy Home Decor: What’s Your Style?

With Wimbledon in full swing, tennis fans and celebrities across the globe are donning their preppiest attire and heading to London to watch the tournament. To join in on the festivities, we’re taking a look at the different types of preppy home decor. Read on!

Palm Beach Preppy

Pink and green preppy tropical bedroom via Anne Hepfer

In various beach locales across the country – Palm Beach, Southampton, Newport – sun worshipers fill their homes with saturated, bold shades of hot pink and emerald green. Brands like Lilly Pulitzer reign supreme alongside palm prints, pom poms and contrasting trim. In this space, designer Anne Hepfer fully embraced the tropical theme, featuring fanned-out leaves in the drapery, upholstered headboard and bed skirt.

Traditional Preppy

On the more restrained end of the spectrum, fans of traditional preppy decor often employ neutral stripes, dark plaids and limited color palettes. When it comes to preppy brands, Ralph Lauren is king. In this dining area, designer Windsor Smith brightened up the space with white Chinese Chippendale chairs and an unexpected pop of yellow.

Eclectic Preppy

Striped eclectic preppy bedroom designed by Sam Allen

For the preppy decorator who wants to punch things up, take a cue from designer Sam Allen, who shared the room above in honor of Wimbledon.

Sam’s tip: “I love the combination of navy and white because it is so versatile. It goes with just about everything! In addition, stripes add depth and interest to a room. A great and simple way to achieve this is to use the pattern on a headboard and match it to the wall, adding a ton of character to the space.”

To ensure a perfect match, select a striped fabric and ask DecoratorsBest to have it backed for you.

Garden Preppy

The garden preppy look shares elements with the Palm Beach preppy style, but it’s a softer version, incorporating floral and chintz patterns, less saturated shades, and generally, a more subdued aesthetic. It’s often seen as a feminine decor style, but as we all know, real men wear pink – and they decorate with it, too!

Asian Decor Modern How to incorporate into your home

4 Modern Ways to Incorporate Asian Patterns into Your Home

Asian-influenced looks are forecasted to be a top trend this year. Incorporate a modern take on the look into your home with these four ideas:

1. Hang Asian-Inspired Panels

Whether it’s a wallpaper or fabric, hanging panels of Eastern patterns on the wall is a contemporary way to bring in a touch of the Asian look. We love how the wall in the dining room below matches the Lily Pulitzer dragon pattern (in her signature bright hue), but you can also use panels to dress up a white wall. See how to make fabric panels here.

2. Asian Toile in Bright or Unexpected Color Combos

Most people consider toile to be a traditional pattern, but an Asian toile done in a bright color refreshes a space. Combine it with unexpected hues, like in this breakfast nook, where the unusual, yet cool teal leather on the banquette contrasts with red toile wallpaper. Other Asian-inspired decor items, like a minimalist chandelier reminiscent of a Chinese lantern, complete the look.

3. Small Eclectic Accents

Chinoiserie patterns fit right into eclectic rooms. The key is to add just a touch here and there, and to mix it with clean patterns that have more structure to them, like plaid. This bedroom uses Schumacher’s beloved Chiang Mai Dragon fabric on the head and footboard of the bed. The pattern ties in with the rest of the room because of the red pieces (pillow & TV stand) while juxtaposing features like the white exposed brick & wood diversify the space.

4. Use Bamboo Motifs

Bamboo is the perfect motif to add a contemporary look to any space. Scalamandre’s Bamboo Trellis wallpaper can take on many looks, from elegant to quirky. Go white on white (with gold accents) or make it funky with celery hues and unconventional art.

How to Incorporate Radiant Orchid into your Home: What Colors Pair Best

Radiant Orchid is 2014’s Pantone Color of the Year. This gorgeous hue makes a statement whichever way you use it, alone or combined with complementary colors. Check out our Radiant Orchid Color Breakdown:

colorwheel1With Blues

Blues, ranging from teal to turquoise, are complementary to Radiant Orchid. Anything in the blue-green family will work because it falls on the opposite side of the color wheel. When colors from these positions on the wheel are combined, it creates a striking visual effect that provides contrast to a room. The dining room’s wall and chair fabric color below work well with the teal painting and accessories, while the bedroom’s warm walls work better with the turquoise silk drapery & striped tablecloth.

colorwheel2With Goldenrod Yellow

It seems almost natural that Radiant Orchid, a hue related to the purple family, should pair with gold–It’s the color combination that royalty have been wearing for years! Deviate from tradition by using the Color of the Year with a deeper goldenrod yellow. It’s both playful and elegant at once. We like the idea of picking up the same gilded hue in picture frames, too.interior decor orchid home dining room table bedroom drapery fabrics wallpaper purple suede velvet blue

colorwheel3With Pinks

Shades of pink coupled with Radiant Orchid virtually gives an updated monochromatic look (another trend for 2014!). Why is this?–Pinks are right next to purples on the color wheel, so many of their undertones are similar, making them meld well together. Vary up the textures and shades (think hot pink & lavender tones), then throw in a little pattern to provide visual depth.

colorwheel4With Orange-Reds

The preppy meets edgy look is in right now, and nothing says it like two bright colors used together (Lilly Pulitzer had it down pat). Neon orange with a red tint looks stunning with the expressive Color of 2014. Temper the duo with accents of black and white, whether its in a geometric drapery or black/white photographs on the wall.

Decorating with Animal Print: The Softer Side of Zebra Stripes

Many zebra prints because of its bold character, but the pattern can be subtle and elegant, too! Get the look with these easy and accessible ways to use zebra stripes in your home:

Barely There

Most of the time when using a strong zebra print, you have to plan your room around it, keeping other details and accessories on the subtle side. With a barely there zebra wallpaper, you can reverse that mindset. Because of its inconspicuous nature, this sandy zebra stripe allows you to play up the color and details in the rest of your decor.

Misty Greys & Baby Blues

Dove grey and powdery blue zebra prints give traditional homes a modern update. Simple decor in a neutral palette of white or cream tones down the stripes, giving the room a restful, slightly ethereal balance.

Warm & Family-Friendly

Believe it or not, by simply altering the white and black zebra stripe to brown and cream, it takes on a completely different look, going from bold to mellow. As seen below, when used with warm pumpkin-toned chenille, floral, and stripes, a zebra couch in cocoa hues blends in, rather than popping out. This look is particularly nice for fall.

Dining Room Elegance

If you thought that ‘elegance’ and ‘zebra print’ would never be used in a sentence together, think again! Charcoal versions in a texture like linen or silk add fresh refinement to a room. Here we see it used as a table cloth against navy walls in Aerin Lauder’s dining room. Below that we see it upholstered onto 18th century chairs paired with chinoiserie drapery and eggplant purple walls.

Fashion Week Round-Up: Top Looks from the Runway

Last week’s Fashion Week here in New York still has us reeling! Check out our favorite looks to grace the runways and how to recreate the look in your home:

Derek Lam’s Gingham

Derek Lam’s Spring collection has us sold on gingham. Normally a pattern associated with the rural girl-next-door aesthetic (think Mary Ann from Gilligan’s Island), Lam cast new light on the pattern with deep V-neck sack dresses, exposed bandeaus, and a combination of black and blue. For decor, we like how both Hervé Pierre, creative director of Carolina Herrera, and Katie Armour, Matchbook Magazine co-founder, both use gingham in unexpected ways, too. Pierre’s canopy bed and long drapes defy odds by giving gingham a romantic 18th century vibe, while Armour’s California living room gives a chic angle to the pattern with pinks walls, modern furniture and a touch of leopard print.

Peter Som & Rachel Comey’s Marble Prints

Swirly graphic marble prints were something fresh and new on the runways this season. Peter Som’s version looked surfer-girl/menswear cool (right down to the shoes) while Rachel Comey’s  ready-to-wear version was a bit more romantic. Once relegated to kids’ bedrooms and play rooms, Burberry Prorsum’s version of polka dots is fresh, punchy, and all grown up.
