How to Incorporate Geometrics into Every Room of Your Home

Foyer & Stairway

You can do things in a small space that you can’t do in a big one so an entryway, foyer or stairway is a great place to try a bold geometric wallpaper in either a strong print or color. Black & white geometrics are more versatile as you can create two different styles depending on whether you pair the look with dark or light furniture. If you’re using a pattern with a huge scale, keep wall hangings and furniture to a minimum, allowing the wall to be the focal point.

Living Room

If you’re looking for a quick pick-me-up in your living room, go for a geometric rug. It will bring your home up to the latest trend without breaking the bank. A dark rug will ground the look, so choose something in a deep hue that complements the colors you’re already using in the room (Hint: navy, black & brown are great neutral go-to’s that work with almost anything). We like a big pattern with a bit of white in it.

Bedroom

There are a couple of ways that you could incorporate geometrics into your bedroom. Throw pillows quickly liven up the bed while a headboard upholstered in an intricate geometric trellis makes a strong statement. We recommend using shades of blue—anywhere from navy to pastel—for its calming properties.

A Complete Guide to Choosing the Perfect Rug Size

When making a decision on rug size, you should take many factors into consideration. Pick a rug like a master decorator with our complete guide to choosing the right rug size:

A great way to get an idea of how much space a rug will take up in a room is to lay out newspaper on the floor using the dimensions of the rug you’re considering. A general rule of thumb is that if you intend for a rug to fill an entire room, always leave at least 18 inches of floor showing between the edge of the rug & the wall. Other rules and guidelines vary by room:

Living Room

Furniture On

This is where the rug fits all of your furniture in its entirety. For this look, make sure that the rug is large enough so that every piece of furniture in the seating area or space is on it.

For smaller areas, a rug that sits between pieces of furniture (not under), works well because it doesn’t out scale the space. This is also a great option for those on a budget, as smaller rugs are less expensive.

Bedroom

A rug used under a bed should extend about 18 inches from the sides of a King or Queen-sized bed and 12 inches for a Full or Twin-sized bed. The rug extension can be much longer than this, and depends on how much of a statement you want the rug to make in the space, but 18″ (or 12″) is the shortest you should go. Dining Room

A rug used under a dining room table should have at least 24″ of rug space from the table edges to the rug’s edges on all sides. This allows the chairs’ legs to stay on the rug even when they are pulled out while someone is seated on it, and will reduce scratches to your floor.
