The premiere of Mad Men (Season 7) on Sunday has us enamored with its ’60s retro-chic decor. Check out our favorite rooms on the set of the show from last season and see how to get the look:
The lobby area of the office has to be stylish at all times because top clients tend to drop by on a whim. Its low-sitting sofa, sculptural arm chair and color-blocked walls are a rainbow mix of muted colors. Get the look of this seating area with mid-century modern furniture covered in a blue-gray fabric and an orange shag rug.
Retro wallpaper motifs like the one in this office are becoming popular again today. Here, a small dose of a strong retro pattern is used as a focal point. Prints like these became hugely popular in the ’60s due to designer David Hicks, who influenced the entire interior design community with his psychedelic geometric patterns & acid-edged colors. Coopers office is our favorite, with it’s textured metallic walls, geometric drapery and red sofas with basket weave bamboo accents. It’s luxurious and has a little bit of an Asian-inspired look to it.
Don’s home, which as of Season 7 is now his bachelor pad (Megan is living in LA for her acting career), is masculine with its varying shades of brown. From the wood paneled and grasscloth walls to the textured brown sofa & hexagonal drapery (another David Hicks reference), this spot is dark in a sexy, brooding way, just like Don Draper! Pops of bright throw pillows add a touch of color.
In contrast, back in the suburbs, Pete’s home has a bright new couch, purchased by his wife, Trudy. The pair had been on the rocks for a while and are now separated. We can see why—Pete’s putting his shoes on a fresh white couch!! Respect the couch, Pete! It may look a little out of place in the living room, but the fabric is divine and fits in perfectly with the painterly trend everyone is in love with right now.
At the end of Season 6, Sally interviews at an all-girls boarding school. The decor here is more traditional, as you would expect from a stately institution, with a subtle damask pattern on the furniture, matching drapery and a classic area rug. We like the idea of modernizing this look by using the same patterns on contemporary furniture.
