Exclusive Designer Tips: How to Add Personal Style to Your Home

The most stunning and memorable homes are those that reflect the owner’s true personality and their life story. Take note from these top interior designers on how to incorporate your own personal style into your home.

Ellie Cullman, Cullman & Kravis

Designer Ellie Cullman brought a multitude of personal touches to this sexy master bedroom at the 2014 Kip’s Bay Decorator Show House. The imaginary client’s temperament must lean toward the sensuous & glamorous side, because the space boasts pieces like a soft fur throw, metallic accents and romantic candles.

Ellie’s Tip: “Embellish a plain white curtain with a horizontal banding of your choosing. Here we designed the embroidered and cut-out banding and fabricated it in our workroom in Queens, but anyone can buy white catalog curtains and add a contrast fabric.”

Jack Ovadia, Ovadia Design Group

Jack Ovadia knows that personal style isn’t the same from one year to the next, which is why he likes to express his clients’ individuality with smaller accent pieces that are easy to switch out once tastes change. In this room, most of the furniture and patterns are solid and neutral enough to work with anything. The fun embellished pillows and the pops of yellow in the table’s centerpiece and wall’s frieze are added touches that are simple to alter in the future.

Jack’s Tip: “Use personal style pieces as a secondary element in the room. Go personal with pillows, small cool furniture pieces, accessories and artwork. Also, don’t overdo the main furniture because turquoise ‘zig-zags’ are your favorite now, but you’re stuck living with them for a long time.”

Sandra Funk Levy, Funk Design Studio

Traditional homes can be given a personal touch by simply adding accessories, which is what designer Sandra Funk Levy did in this Center Hall Estate living room. To give the space color, she added a couple of bright coffee table books, fresh tulips & hyacinth flowers, and a few Asian-inspired pieces.

Sandra’s Tip: “This is your space, so bring in your favorite books, plants and decorative accessories that are true to your personality.”

Gary McBournie, Gary McBournie Inc.

Interior designer Gary McBournie brought a white-walled space to life using multiple shades of blue in this Nantucket cottage bedroom. He made the bed the focal point of the room, carrying the bold blue stripes through both the bed’s cornice & bed skirt.

Gary’s Tip: “I would suggest looking at your wardrobe.  What colors in this palette do you like?  What do you look best in?  Are you more of a neutral person that uses color as an accent or are you a bit bolder and use neutrals as an accent?  The ultimate scheme has to be something that you can live with and that you look good in.”
