Exclusive Designer Tips: How to Decorate Small Spaces

Our Summer Designer Tips Series continues! This week, designers give us some great words of wisdom on how to decorate rooms that are small. Check it out:

Leslie Rinehardt and Marvin Miller, Rinehardt Miller Interiors

Leslie Rinehardt & Marvin Miller made the most out of the small bedroom they designed for the Lenox Hill Hospital Designer Show House at the W New York Downtown Residences by creating a calm setting that featured a large headboard upholstered in Robert Allen fabric & mirrored custom fretwork closet doors.

Leslie & Marvin’s Tip: “If you are working with a space that has natural light and a view, play up those features by adding mirrors to the wall opposite the window, which brings more light and reflectivity in.”

Another gorgeous room at the W New York Downtown Residences Show House was the main living area designed by Jack Ovadia. Strong abstract leaf-inspired wallpaper made a bold statement in the seating area near the windows, while rich textures like mink & velvet were used to create a sumptuous feeling.

Jack’s Design Tip: “I like to paint the exterior walls in a light color and have a dark pattern/texture on the wall adjacent to the windows–It makes the space feel bigger while not distracting from the windows’ view.”

Mercedes Desio & Albert Villalobos were challenged with the smallest space at this year’s Kips Bay Decorator Show House, of which they sought to transform into a “luxurious gentleman’s cabinet”/“studiolo” that created a layered, secretive & warm atmosphere.

Mercedes & Albert’s Tip: “By grouping objects in a bookcase or a cabinet, you can create a focal point and avoid clutter in a small space.”
