Hamptons Designer Show House 2014: Tips from the Designers & More!

The Hamptons Designer Show House 2014 is situated on a quiet Bridgehampton street that was once surrounded by corn fields. Beautiful shingle style houses now fill the area and the show house blends in perfectly. Complete with rooms ranging from “beachy” and easy-living to sophisticated, 25 talented interior designers created a cohesive and timeless feeling within the house that reflects the Hamptons lifestyle everyone yearns for when summer rolls around. Similar to the 2013 show houses, gray was the predominant color, with a few pops of bright orange and luscious pink sprinkled in.

While touring the house, we got first-hand tips from the designers on how to recreate the impressive looks that they put together. Check out their pointers plus more of our favorite rooms at the show house:

Patrik Lönn, Patrick Lonn Design

Swedish designer Patrik Lönn looked to his home country for inspiration when decorating the great room. He tried to recreate the feeling of Gotland, a remote Island in Sweden–“It’s all about windy, textured dry beach, sand, rocks and driftwood,” explains Patrik. Most of the room’s fabrics & colors were the same calm sandy hue, yet varied in texture. We especially love the patchwork rug, which provides visual interest without overwhelming the space. Additionally, instead of using matching lamps on either side of the sofa, Patrik used two different ones that vary in height yet have the same color lampshade–it keeps it symmetrical, but changes up the space’s composition.

Patrik’s Tip: “Use vintage tablecloths or wall hangings to make throw pillows. We made beautiful pillows out of vintage Märta Måås Fjetterström wall hangings for pillows in my room.”

Gail Tarasoff, Anne Tarasoff Interiors

The stunning combination of hot pink and tangerine orange on the show house’s covered porch designed by Gail Tarasoff & team would put anyone in a happy mood. “We walked into the beautiful backyard and wanted to create a space that felt as if we were in a hip hotel. We chose all the funky bright colors and patterns to make the space come alive,” said Gail. Special touches include the drapery that encloses the porch, which are made of both a sheer white fabric and orange bottom panel/trim. This grounds the look, making the porch feel like a real room.

Gail’s Tip: When entertaining, create comfortable seating areas for conversation. Also, good food and drinks always make for a great party! We chose to set up the bar area on the low console and have everything you need close by so you don’t have to leave your guests.”

Melanie Roy, Melanie Roy Design, LLC

Melanie’s design goal when decorating the mudroom & bathroom was to provide a sophisticated yet functional family-friendly area. She pulled inspiration from the East End’s beautiful beaches and nautical aesthetic, creating a main color palette of sea blues and sandy taupes.  Thought was put into every detail of the room, including the window seat, which is upholstered in a water-resistant indoor/outdoor Duralee fabric & jute trim so that the family who lives there can relax even if they’re in wet bathing suits. Another element that really makies the bathroom special is the antique porthole mirror and marine lighting which completes the nautical theme.

Melanie’s Tip:  “When faced with a lack of storage, get creative! We utilized rustic wire baskets, galvanized buckets and trays to store flip flops, towels, footballs and all the necessary items for a great day at the beach. We also hung galvanized cleats on the wall to enhance the nautical theme and provide much-needed hanging storage.”

Missy & Denise Rinfret, The Rinfret Group

Inspired by the Hamptons lifestyle of beach-living, family get-togethers and entertaining, Missy and Denise Rinfret put together an entryway that feels inviting. The space is quite large, so they created a spot where guests could sit and relax or, if throwing a party, could entertain at. They added personality to the room with a touch of refreshing beach-themed fabric and abstract artwork that complements the pillow patterns.

Missy’s & Denise’s Tip: “If you have a large, spacious entry, make it more inviting and cozy by adding a sitting area. Open spaces are all the rage right now, but people love a sense of comfort when walking into a house as well.
