American Dream Builders: Our 4 Favorite Transformations & How to Get the Look

American Dream Builders, NBC’s new reality-competition TV show, brings together 12 talented designers and architects, split into two teams, to renovate homes around the U.S. The show gives a fresh spin on design competition shows in that the designers are top notch and have been featured in magazines like House Beautiful. “The standard wisdom about design shows on television is that they have to be about how fast and how inexpensively something can be done. I wanted to produce a show that aims for a higher level of quality and inspiration, something much closer to what a sophisticated audience thinks of as good design,” says Nate Berkus, the show’s host & executive producer  (Architectural Digest).

Check out out our favorite room makeovers from the show so far & how how to get the look:

Episode 1: Living Room – Team Red

Designer Erinn Valencich took the lead on this room, transforming it into a chic, sophisticated space to entertain and relax in. A large blue-grey rug brings new dimension to the room while a combination of modern vs. antique furniture makes the space both fashion forward & comfortable. We love the bright fuchsia sofa and the chevron stripe throw.

Episode 3: Bedroom – Team Blue

This bedroom was a tough one to work with because of its limited space and little natural light. Designer Andrew Flesher rose to the challenge, creating something that all of the judges loved. By making the olive green walls white and keeping things simple, he immediately made the space feel much lighter and spacious. The most genius part of this room is the headboard, which is a great weekend DIY project that anyone can do. Andrew hung curtain rods from the ceiling and creatively draped a lovely golden yellow suzani fabric on them.

Episode 1: Living Room –  Team Blue

Team Blue took this traditional & neutral living room from blah to modern & fabulous by using white walls as a blank canvas for blues & vivid orange hues. By recreating the seating arrangement in the space, the room takes on a more complete feeling, while various textures & a gorgeous patchwork rug give mid-century modern furniture a dose of pizazz.

Episode 2: Guest Bedroom – Team Red

In this challenge, designers were working with cabins located deep in the woods. Many of the spaces, like this guest bedroom, had low ceilings and looked crowded & dingy. Team Red came to the rescue, arranging the focal point near the window to work with the natural light, as well as getting rid of the bunk beds to make the ceiling feel higher. We like how designer Dann Foley played up the lodge feeling in the space with a textured wallpaper, ethnic rug & pillow fit with deer antlers.
