Autumn Inspiration: 3 Ways To Decorate with Brown

Inspired by Benjamin Moore’s commerical which boasts that they have “14 shades [of paint] just for chocolate,” has us thinking about rich cocoa hues, from dark and bitter to sweet and milky. Brown is a color that works for every season and in nearly any room, but it becomes increasingly popular during Autumn. Its likeness to the earth’s soil makes it a grounding, robust hue that carries a nice weight. Check out these three different ways to decorate with the hue right now:

On The Walls…

Keep your look modern with a hazelnut shade of wallpaper that has a contemporary design or an unexpected texture, like grasscloth. The great thing about brown is that it’s neutral, so depending on the undertones, it can take on a cool or warm color palette. Warm it up with sunny marigold hues and gold accents or take it to the cool side with white accessories and furniture with silver accents.

With Blue…

Many of us associate blue and turquoise with summer because of their likeness to the ocean and swimming pools. If you have a room that is predominantly aqueous, adding in warm russet colors helps transition it to fall and winter by providing some warmth. The two work well as a pair because they contrast each other. Tie them together with accent pillows that contain both colors, and don’t be afraid to mix patterns!

In Monochromatic Layers…

This room, designed by Vicente Wolf, layers every shade of brown (from dark roasted espresso to creamy cappuccino) in lots of lavish textures: wool on the floor and chairs, linen on the walls, velvet on the sofa, and silk on the pillows. Wolf believes that, “brown is the new black,” and that it, “makes a room feel earthy and gives a sense of richness.” (Elle Decor)

  1. Dear Decorators Best, Thank you for your latest Post on shades of Brown. It has duly inspired me to redecorate my Lofty Aerie on 65th Street in Autumnal colors, using Benjamin Moore’s commercial 14 shades of Chocolate[sounds so delicious] with an equal number of shades of Blue. I’ll be in touch with you to discuss this further. Until then,I remain, Yours Truly Mrs. Hermyerna
