Decorating Tip: How To Keep Summer Alive All Year Round

Labor Day is upon us, which marks the end of summer. Keep a little bit of summer in your home all year round with these ideas:

Sunny Yellow Fabric or Wallpaper

Crisp, sunny yellows are synonymous with summertime, and they can work as you transition to fall, too. The brightness of the hue will keep you happy and warm long after the weather turns cold. The key to keeping it  appropriate for the approaching season is to pair it with a color palette like this:

Touch of Whimsy

Summer has a more casual vibe and a silliness to it. Whimsical patterns exude that summer fun and will make you smile each time you see it in your home, even when winter arrives. This particular room was designed by Jack Levy for the Kip’s Bay Decorator Show House in the Hamptons this year, and because of the dark background on the Fornasetti fish design, the look will work throughout the whole year.  Try a kooky print with a deeper tone on the walls mixed with charcoal silk, fall foliage-colored damasks, and brass accents.

Nautical Stripes

A little bit of a nautical striped linen fabric will conjure memories of soaking up rays on a boat all year round. Instead of the standard blue and white stripe, opt for one with mostly reds. Pair it with heavier textured fabrics like velvet and rich red floral drapery to take it into fall, and still be cheerful.
