Impressionist and Fauvist artworks must be on the mind of textile & wallpaper designers right now, because they’re turning out beautiful patterns that evoke the work of Monet & Matisse. Check out these art-inspired designs:
Claude Monet’s artwork is of the Impressionist genre, which was characterized by a series of thin brushstrokes of color. These strokes took precedence over lines and contours and created the appearance of movement. Here, one of Monet’s several versions of The Waterlily Pond depicts a small stream on his land.
Here, Monet uses bolder color and thicker brush strokes to convey a vibrant flower garden.
Matisse
An artist of wide range and ability, Henri Matisse is known for his bold combinations of colors and is considered one of the foremost figures in modern art. His famous ceramic piece, La Gerbe, reflects previous works made with bright paper cutouts. Several fabric and wallpaper designers have been inspired by this piece and created patterns that pay homage to it.
Many of Matisse’s works were classified into a new genre called Fauvism. Meaning “wild beast,” this genre pulled from Impressionism, and used strong, explicit brush strokes and intense color. Matisse’s painting The Moulade is a prime example of this.
